Research
John Price
56 year old plumber John Price was told in 2001 there was no more that could be done for him; his kidney cancer had spread to his leg, lungs and stomach.
“I’d prepared myself for the worst but was asked if I’d help test a new drug on a clinical trial at the Weston Park Cancer Research Centre. There was nothing to lose and, as it happened, a whole life to be gained. The drug not only stopped the tumours growing, it also shrank them and it’s why I am still here today.
I still attend clinic in the Cancer Research Centre and meet with other kidney cancer patients. My consultant is the top man in the UK for Renal (Kidney) Cancer so I am very lucky to have been treated here at Weston Park Hospital. Treatments have moved on tremendously since then and I know that if I ever need it again I will get the latest, most effective treatment possible.
People need to realise how lucky we are having this world class Cancer Research Centre here for us. The knowledge and expertise is second to none. And the work they do is making it better for patients not only in the UK but all over the world.
This research has given me precious, extra, quality years with my family - longer than I could have ever dreamed. I’ve set a goal of seeing my sons graduate. If I get there I will set another goal.
