The Need for WP2020 For Business

The Facts

  • Weston Park Hospital serves a population of 1.8 million people, centred in Sheffield and embracing Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster Rotherham, and surrounding areas. Each year, almost 10,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in this region and 70,000 will be living with the disease. Most will have passed through our doors.
  • Since 1994 Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity has been at the forefront of providing charitable support to the region’s only specialist cancer hospital. Over £20m has been raised and invested to improve the care of cancer patients across the population.
  • The demand for, and the shape of, cancer services is changing rapidly. It is important that the charity recognises and responds to these changes to be in the best position to support the needs of cancer patients over the next 5 years.
  • 1 in 2 people born since the 1960s will develop cancer in their lifetime, so the number of people requiring cancer services will continue to increase rapidly.
  • Survival rates for most cancers continue to increase and we anticipate that by 2020, an extra 30,000 patients nationally a year will survive cancer for ten years or more.
  • Whilst the news of increased survival rates is good, we need to consider the nature and level of services provided to patients living with the after-effects of cancer and its treatment, many of whom will also be living with at least one long-term condition.
  • The charity will continue to support innovative and high quality clinical developments addressing this increasing clinical and care need. It also needs to show a step-change in the amount of income it generates in order to be able to continue to support the services provided by the NHS in a meaningful way.

We are very proud that this region has a specialist cancer centre from which patients, locally, nationally and internationally can benefit.
